As I threw things in my bag, the gentle murmuring started up again, floating through the cabin. The voices were more cheerful. Some of them were singing together softly, a soothing tone. That’s when the shouting started.

The wailer just wailed. There was a knock. Shuuush, said one of the voices.

The knock came again. The voices were a wave of anguished sound. I went to the door. It was the man who drove the blue pickup truck. He waved. There was a restless group of people behind him. The other residents.

Katy, let’s go, said Peter, pushing past me with his bag and walking toward the car.
